This is a handmade project; the time and care taken in creating each flower is part of the symbolic power of the finished piece.
Please send in knit, crochet, or wet/needle-felted poppies only. We cannot accept fabric (this includes commerical felt), quilted, ribbon, or embroidered flowers at this time. Commerically-made or plastic flowers will not be used either.
Poppies should be red (not pink, purple, or orange) with black and/or green centers. Any shade of red is fine; in either wool and/or acrylic yarn. Please use solid, non-shiny colours only; don’t use variegated, heathered, striping, metallic, or shiny rayon-type yarns. We will be posting a list of commonly available and suitable red yarns on our website but if you have something in your stash that matches, feel free to use it.
The center of the poppies may be embellished with buttons, beads, and embroidery but please don’t use overly shiny or metallic materials such as glitter, sequins, or rhinestones. The finished piece is meant to be sober!
The ideal poppy size is from a minimum of 7.5cm (3 inches) to a maximum of 12.5cm (5 inches) across (measure at the widest point as your poppy lays naturally on the table – most poppies will “pop out” – don’t flatten them to make them bigger). Poppies that are too small can’t be seen, and poppies that are too large crowd out others.
We reserve the right to make the final decision as to which poppies are suitable for use in the final piece. Poppies that are not included in the final piece will not be returned.
