Simple Knit Poppy (ribbing)

DK or worsted weight yarn (or use fingering held double) in red, scraps of green and black (black eyelash wool looks great!)
3.5-4mm circular, DPN or straight needles (your choice), size depending on yarn weight (size down, as we want poppy fabric to be tight)

You will be making a shallow tube of K2P2 ribbing.

cast on 60 sts. If using circular or DPN needles, join in a round. K2P2 ribbing for 10 rows.
Row 11: K2tog to end of row. 30 st remain.
Row 12: [sl1 pw wyib, K2tog, psso] to end of row. 10 st remain.

Break yarn, leaving tail. Run tail through sts remaining on needle and pull tight to gather. If knit flat, sew seam up the short side.

Center: using green, cast on 8 sts and knit a square in stocking stitch (approx 10 rows). Bind off, leaving a long tail. Using this tail, run a line of running stitch around the edge of the square and pull tight to form a round center, with the wrong side out (ie. Reverse stocking stitch shows). Sew to center of poppy.

Using black (optional: eyelash), enbroider stamens around center.

Small Crochet Poppy with Petals

DK or Worsted weight yarn in red, scraps of green and black.
3.0 or 3.5mm hook depending on yarn weight (size down, as we want poppy fabric to be tight)

start with center, in green:

make a slip ring (“magic loop” crochet) and ch3, then 11 triple crochet into center of ring. Slip st into top of chain sts to close. This makes a little cone-line object; pop it “out”. Break yarn. Join red.

Round 1: ch 3, 1 triple crochet into first st, then 2 triple crochet into each following st. Slip st into top of chain sts to close.

Round 2: Ch2, 1 double in next st. Repeat: [1 triple in nex st, 2 triples in next st, 1 triple in next st, 2 triples in next st, 1 double and 1 sc in next st, 1 double and 1 sc in next st] 3 times. Over last 5 sts: 1 triple in nex st, 2 triples in next st, 1 triple in next st, 2 triples in next st, 1 double and 1 sc in next st, slip st to beginning of round to close.

Make 12 strands of black yarn about 4 inches long (wind yarn around your hand a dozen times and cut). Fold each strand in half and using the crochet hook make a slipknot fringe around the green center. Trim ends to desired length.
